In this remake of Akira Kurosawa’s film Ikiru, Mr. Williams (Bill Nighy) is a buttoned-down mid-level bureaucrat in postwar London. It isn’t until he learns that he has terminal cancer that he realizes that he’s been existing, but not truly living, and rediscovers life’s capacity for passion and joy. Nighy’s understated performance has earned him a nomination for best actor at the 2023 Academy Awards. Deeply affecting and an utter treat for the senses, Living is as timeless a film as the message at its core.

A little movie about big topics, Living takes on nothing less than life itself and features a quiet, note-perfect performance from Bill Nighy. Adam Graham, Detroit News

The quietly powerful Living defies expectations at every turn. Max Weiss, Baltimore Magazine

Bill Nighy delivers a master class in acting as a stifled Brit bureaucrat who decides to seize the day before it’s too late. Working in miniature to achieve major truths, this deeply human drama has the power to sneak up and knock you sideways. Peter Travers, ABC News
