Menashe (Menashe Lustig), a kind but hapless grocery store clerk, struggles to maintain custody of his young son, Rieven, following the death of his wife. Within Brooklyn’s ultra-orthodox Hasidic Jewish community, tradition prohibits Menashe from raising his son alone, so Rieven is adopted by his uncle. But before his wife’s memorial, Menashe is granted a final chance to prove himself a suitable man of faith and fatherhood, and restore respect among his doubters. Shot in secret in the Hasidic community depicted, this strikingly authentic movie sheds light on a notoriously private community.
Weinstein brings a palpable authenticity (attributable in part to a cast made up of local non-actors) to this universally resonant story, rendering it unique and specific in a meticulously detailed setting. Peter Keough, Boston Globe
