Entre Les Murs / The Class

Year: 2008
Country: France
Director: Laurent Cantet
Leads: François Bégaudeau
Genre: Drama
Runtime: 128 minutes
Rating: PG-13 (language)
Language: French
Winner of the Palme d'Or at the 2008 Cannes Film Festival, Laurent Cantet's Entre les Murs / The Class is an absorbing journey into a multicultural high school in Paris over the course of a school year in a milieu reflecting the ‘new’ France. François Begaudeau--an actual teacher and the author upon whose work the film was based--is utterly convincing as the lead; an openminded teacher in charge of a classroom of youngsters from a wide variety of backgrounds, who butts heads with other adults who don't appear to have any sympathy for their students.

Reviews:

Michael Sragow, Baltimore Sun: “Entre Les Murs ranks with the very best films ever made about teaching, and it's unlike any English or American film about teaching ever made.”

Peter Bradshaw, Guardian [UK]: “French director Laurent Cantet does something miraculous with it in this fresh piece of humanist, realist, optimist cinema.”

Roger Ebert, Chicago Sun-Times: “The movie is bursting with life, energy, fears, frustrations and the quick laughter of a classroom hungry for relief.”
