Reviews:

David Nusair, Reel Film Reviews: “An amiable yet entirely standard coming of age story… director Léa Pool does a nice job of capturing the feel of small-town 1960s life, and it's also worth noting that the filmmaker has wisely resisted the impulse to populate the supporting cast with a whole host of impossibly quirky figures.”

Ard Vijn, IFRR 2009: “Do not go in expecting to be rocked to the core, but let it creep up on you and note how effective it is.”

Set in the mid-sixties, this vibrant and beautifully crafted film focuses on teenaged Élise (Marianne Fortier), who is about to realize that the adult world is not exactly what she thought or hoped it would be. As Élise grows reluctantly more aware of what is going on around her she finds refuge in visits with her deaf-mute friend, M. Mouche. Superficially, this may seem like a coming-of-age story, but the movie focuses on the unsustainably separate worlds inhabited by men and women in the years before feminism. Throughout the movie the languid, summery tone provides a perfect counterpoint to Élise's tumultuous mindset. The atmosphere of the film seems timeless; paradoxically intensifying our sense that time is passing quickly.
