The Illusionist
 March 27, 2011 – Galaxy Cinema 7:00pm

Reviews:

Matt Brunson, Creative Loafing: "A lovingly crafted film that smoothly alternates between being bittersweet and simply sweet, yet the occasionally aloof visual style frequently keeps it at arm's length from our emotions."

Rubin Safava, Cinemalogue.com: "In a Spartan eighty minutes, layers of visual, narrative and character detail are fluidly conveyed, doubly so for a film that contains no dialogues."

Peter Canavese, Groucho Reviews: "Tati's masterful mime easily inspires an animated treatment, recapturing his graceful comic body language and 'no subtitles required' international appeal.

A poignant work of animation set in the late 1950s written by Jacques Tati and adapted by Sylvan Chomet. As stage entertainers give way to the world of rock stars, a struggling but dignified illusionist is forced to accept increasingly obscure assignments. While performing in a pub in Scotland, he encounters an innocent young girl who believes his tricks to be real magic. Enchanted by her enthusiasm, the illusionist 'conjures' increasingly lavish gifts into existence to keep her dream alive. A timeless story, the film itself is a hand-drawn beauty, with particular attention paid to the study of light.
